What is Flat Bed Freight?

Flatbed shipping encompasses freight that does not require full enclosure of Dry Vans and is not restricted to having to be loaded/unloaded from a dock. A flatbed’s design allows for larger freight/goods that can be both side loaded/unloaded via forklift or crane from all angles.

Flat Bed

  • Industry standard is 48’ length - 53’ trailers are an option but are specialized and not as readily available.
  • Freight can be up to 102” (8.5’ wide) and up to 102” (8.5’) height.
  • Typically, can scale 46,000-48,000 lbs depending on the trailer with a specific carrier.

Step Deck (Drop Deck)

  • Industry standard is 48’ length - 53’ trailers are an option but are specialized and not as readily available.
  • Top Deck - 10’ or 11’ in length and Freight can be up to 102” (8.5’ wide) and up to 102” (8.5’) height.
  • Main Deck - 37’ or 38’ in length and Freight can be up to 102” (8.5’ wide) and up to 120” (10’) height. Typically, can scale 45,000 – 46,000 lbs

Double Drop

  • Industry standard is 48’ in length - This trailer type is broken up into three sections.
  • Top Deck - 10’ in length and Freight can be up to 102” (8.5’ wide) and up to 102” (8.5’) height.
  • Main Deck - 29’ in length and Freight can be up to 102” (8.5’ wide) and up to 138” (11.5’) height.
  • Rear Deck - 9’ in length and Freight can be up to 102” (8.5’ wide) and up to 120” (10’) height.

RGN/Lowboy

  • This trailer type has a main deck that is typically 26’ – 29’ in length.
  • Freight can be up to 102” (8.5’ wide) and up to 138” (11.5’) height.
  • Maximum weight of 42,000 lbs
